We all know that rugs are elegant furniture that can go perfectly with our home interiors, however they are quite expensive. You need to spend hundreds for you to avail a nice looking rug or you can just settle for an inexpensive choice. If you want a rug without designs and has one color then a carpet remnant is definitely a cheaper option. These remnants are carpet leftovers and are often sold in lesser prices.

To find the right remnant go to shops that sell carpets. Remnants are leftovers which can’t be sold next to regular items which makes their prices lower. You may find group of remnants piled along the corner of a shop. Or if you won’t see any of them, try to ask the owner or the shop attendant if they have any remnants. It is very suitable to replace a rug. Remember to go to many shops before purchasing.

You should know that shops aren’t the mere place to get a nice looking remnant. With the internet’s availability such remnants can also be searched online. There are several online stores where you can find such remnants, but be sure the seller is just living near your place as it is better to inspect first before purchasing it. Shops that specialized in remnants can also be found online.

Most of the time, a carpet shop’s remnant is often cheaper compared from a remnant specialty store. A lot of shop owners just want to throw them away which may lead a room for you to bargain on its price. That is less likely to happen in shops which specialize in selling such remnants.
Never forget binding your remnant’s ends to avoid its strands from unraveling. A lot of shops have binding machines and will have them bind it in exchange for smaller prices or even just for free.

Always remember to get the right remnant for you. Match its color to the theme of your living room or furniture. It will definitely add style to your place. Hope you got a lot of ideas in buying remnants.

If your garage floor looks dirty or it is full of oil spills and other grime, it may be time for you to do something with it. There are several options for covering up or re-doing flooring that you can choose from.

One of the simplest methods is to purchase floor mats that are specifically designed for garages. They come in different designs, most of which are channeled to allow water and other liquids to roll off. Popular designs include ribbed mats, diamond mats, and coin designed mats. You do not need to do anything, other than a cursory cleaning your floor before laying the matting down. It will cover up any stains and due to the designs on the mats it will also keep your floor clean.

Another option is to lay floor tiles down. A good floor tile should be able to withstand damage from oil spills, chemical spills, grease spills, anti-freeze spills and they should also be able to hold up to being driven on by heavy vehicles including small trucks. They look great, often forming a checker board pattern. Some tiles simply lock together to form a new floor, while others are self-adhesive. Most tiles are very easy to place.

Finally, a more long term and slightly more complex solution to upgrading your flooring is to actually paint the floor with special garage flooring paint and then cover with an epoxy solution. This takes quite a bit longer than simply laying tiles or matting down, as you have to wait for the paint to dry very well between applications. However, it is a very good longer term solution that also keeps your garage looking very clean and neat. The site, floors-web.com has several very good posts that go into more details on exactly how to apply each of these methods to the flooring of your garage and it is well worth checking out if you are planning on upgrading in this way.

If you own a home you should have a professional carpet cleaning service come to your house at least once a year (two times a year is better) but with the economy this is not always possible. You want your home to be as clean and neat as possible (hopefully) and getting your carpets steam cleaned is one of the ways you can do this. Vacuuming just gets up the surface dirt but professional carpet cleaners make your carpets totally clean.

Now, I want to start off by saying that most carpet cleaning companies are totally legitimate. They work hard and many of them charge under the standard rate (a friend of mine who owns a Tacoma carpet cleaning company is one of them).

Cleaning someone’s carpet is hard work, especially when you have to move furniture around, and you will usually see these technicians sweating from head to toe once they are done. Unfortunately due to competition and the desire to make more money many local carpet cleaning companies have resorted to less than honest tactics in getting clients.

Its called the “bait and switch method” and it is a real popular thing to do in this industry.

Here is what the process involves:

First, you advertise a really low rate. This could be on Craigslist, in the newspaper, the internet, radio, television, or any other advertising medium. It usually says something like “3 rooms for $59.” Who is going to resist that price when the standard rate for three rooms is $100-$120 depending on the size and if there is furniture or not.

Second, the customer bites. This is not a service most people like to get. Unlike entertainment, food, and drink they get their carpets cleaned because they have to. And because it is not a luxury item many people want to deal “deal” possible. Ah, bargain hunters. Perfect candidates for the “bait and switch” technique.

Third, the technicians come out and do the job. Unfortunately, before they do the work the story changes. It could be for a variety of reasons. They usually have a list of them.

Some of them include:

Bigger area than you stated

Hallways not includes

Service charge

Deal “expired”

Does not include fee for moving furniture

You were misquoted

The reasons are endless but the result is the same. Homeowners usually get this service done before a big event. Maybe they are planning a huge social gathering at their house or maybe they are going out of town and want the carpets cleaned before they leave. Either way, nine times out of ten they will not want to set up another appointment with another carpet cleaning company. Especially if they took off from work to meet them.

Fourth, and finally, more than likely the homeowner will reluctantly pay the higher price instead of wasting more of his or her time.

Its done more common than people think. That special for $49 will easily be $249 before its all said and done.

Here is the solution.

Find a reputable company and find out what the going rate is in your area. Any company that charges under $100 is most likely going to do a bait and switch.

Local carpet cleaning companies have to pay

their employees

rent

for cleaning supplies

fuel

insurance

business licensing fees

taxes (self employment and federal)

vehicle maintenance

etc

Business owners can only pay all those items and finally themselves if they are averages $100 per job minimum. So when you see deals that are bellow that you should beware. Nobody is in business to loose.

Again, find a carpet cleaning service that is established, trustworthy, and charges reasonably with all of their fees and rates upfront.

The simple cement garage flooring that initially comes with a new garage is very functional and it will last a while, but eventually it will start to wear away. When the floor wears out it can become hazardous, or at the very least inconvenient, and an eyesore.

There are a number of different ways to refinish a garage floor. The floors can be made to look even better than they did when they were brand new. Add different colors, textures, and feels to the floor that puts it in a completely different class all together.

When deciding on a new garage floor covering there are many options to choose from. There are both paints and epoxys, there are also tiles, rubber mats, and vinyl covering. While all of these can make a floor look better some suit different purposes better than others. If the garage floor is getting scratched or just looks a little worn garage floor paint may be the thing to use. This will make the floor look like new and provide an extra coat of protection.

Another alternative is epoxy. This is more durable than paint and it will fix larger cracks and breaks in the floor than paint can’t. Garage floor epoxy is more expensive but for the job that it does it is well worth the cost. Epoxy can be made to look like different designs and styles that paint can not.

Tiles and rubber mats provide more protection than epoxy or paint but they are better for new floors. They will not fix damage done to the old floor, so it is best to put them on a nice level floor. There are some very heavy duty tiles that can make the floor surface very strong. Tiles are good because if one section gets broken it can easily be replaced without having to do something to the whole floor.

There are many different options when it comes to covering a garage floor. They all work, but to be truly satisfied with the results you should make sure that the covering used is the right one for the job. For any other flooring information floors-web.com is a great place to look.

Has the chaotic state of the economy brought your plans to find that dream home to a screeching halt? Are you questioning the wisdom of trying to get a mortgage with all of the new rules put in place? Perhaps, like many of your fellow Americans, you should consider moving up by staying where you are and remodeling your current house.

A lot of people have come to the conclusion that they don’t necessarily need to double or triple their square footage to be happy. What they do want is to upgrade the appliances in the kitchen and maybe install new cabinets and counter tops, finally get that Jacuzzi tub for the master bathroom or turn a portion of the basement into a media room. All great choices but the number one remodeling project for most is to rip out those carpets and put down hardwood floors.

There’s not much that will add more value to a home than the classic, warm glow of oak or the rich radiance of walnut wood flooring. There is quite a difference, though, in picking out a wall-sized high definition TV and installing wood floors. The television, while a significant investment, is something you know you will be replacing in a few years. Far more care needs to be taken when choosing the type floor you have installed because there is a good chance that it will be there long after you’ve moved on.

For those not able to make the investment in wood flooring, there is the less expensive option of something like walnut or oak laminate flooring. Laminate is actually a photograph applied over a fiber board and resin composite. While not real wood, the process has been greatly improved and products are available that have the appearance of most hardwoods and even those with the look of stone or brick. The higher-end offerings can even be purchased with a textured surface.

In the end, the choices are many and depend entirely on your situation, budget and dreams. A little research and patience could very well get you much closer to that dream home.

Are you tired of those ugly black spots on your garage floor caused by oil leaks from your car? You know what I mean, you back out of the garage and there’s a black puddle of oil that leaked of your engine the night before. These are not only ugly they are also dangerous as they can be very slick if you accidently step in the oil and there happens to be a little water from rain or snow melt on the floor. But there is an even more dangerous situation: try walking through the house after accidently stepping in some oil and see if you don’t take your life in your wife’s hands.

Of course the first step to solving this problem is to fix the leak in the car. If you are a weekend mechanic then most of the time this is something that can be handled but if not, take it to shop and find out where the leak is coming from.

The second step is to deal with the floor. Degreasing the floor and then applying a good garage floor sealant will help to protect the surface of the concrete and also make any spills you do have less dangerous because the sealant will usually come with an anti-slip additive to spread on over the coating. Getting the floor absolutely clean is the first step to apply the sealant. Use a good quality degreaser first and then wash again with soap and water. You will need to put in some muscle at scrubbing. I have found a 16” or 18” floor broom works very well for this as you can put a lot of pressure down on the floor when you are working the detergent in.

After rinsing all the soap off the floor check to be sure you don’t have any petroleum left. This is very simple to do by checking for water beading. If the surface water seems to seep unto the surface of the concrete then the sealant will bond very well but if the water beads on the surface, this is usually shown by little spots or puddles that sit on top, then the sealant will not be able to bond and you will need to degrease and scrub some more.

After the floor is cleaned let it sit till completely dry and then apply the garage floor sealant. Once it is rolled out you can cast the anti-slip material on top which will give you good footing. Some additives are mixed in with the sealant before application but I like to spread it on top as it seems to give a better result.

You can generally walk on the surface in about 18 hours but don’t drive your car in for about 3 days. Check the label for curing times.

Once having decided to purchase an outdoor rug as a means to improve the look and functionality of your outdoor living space, it is necessary to investigate the many types of outdoor rugs. With outdoor rugs becoming so popular as a home decor item, the options in size, color, texture, and materials requires some thought to make your choice a perfect one for your specific environment.

Durability is the primary concern. Your outdoor carpet will have to stand up to all the elements can throw at it and still retain its color and structural integrity for years. If you want an all-natural look for your outdoor space, be it porch, patio, or gazebo, natural bamboo or sisal twine braided rugs will provide good service although they require some extra care occasionally. The longest lasting outdoor rugs are made of 100% stabilized polypropylene. This strong synthetic fabric can be woven into either flat rugs or can be made to imitate the pushiness of indoor carpet. It can be colored and patterned any way imaginable so as to match any design decor.

Size is also important. Depending on the area you wish to use it in, a small area rug may accent other elements of the outdoor space. If full coverage is required, a full area outdoor rug may be needed. While small patterned rugs can be incorporated in a design, usually full area rugs of a solid color or simple pattern will help show off your design elements without making the space appear too “busy.”

Deciding on the outdoor rug is as important to good home decor as picking the carpets inside your home. If you are seeking to extend the interior design to your outdoor space you will need to find outdoor rugs that match or compliment your existing decor. A well thought out outdoor rug purchase can provide both satisfaction and practicality in presenting your home living spaces in a well-designed appealing manner.

If you are thinking of putting some new carpet in your house, then looking for good quality carpet underlay will be important. To make sure everything looks and feels right it’s always best to lay a new underlay so that your carpet will last longer. Also, the underlay will act as extra layer to mop up wet spills, heat and act as a barrier against excessive noise.

There are two types of basic carpet underlay:

a.) Waffle Foam Rubber - is the more popular variety and comes in different degrees of thickness. When choosing the underlay make sure you buy according to thickness of the carpet. Avoid choosing a very thick under lay if the carpet is thin, because it may affect the over all look of the carpet when it is laid. A flat foam or rubber underlay is worth buying as it will last longer the carpet it self. You will be surprised at its durability when you look at the condition the old carpet is removed.

b.) Polyurethane Chips Underlay – This is a very ecologically green product as it composed of high treated recycled furniture. You can get either the Nimbus underlay or the Cirrus underlay. Both have good properties for example, Nimbus is quick to clean and easy to handle; Cirrus is an excellent conductor of heat and can effectively reduce any noises from the apartment below and outside.

If you live in a very cold part of the country, then adding a quality underlay will make your house much warmer. Not only will your house heat up quicker, it will considerably reduce any heating bills. Plus if the area you are re carpeting is an high traffic area like the hallway then make sure you select part of that underlay which contains Silver Lining underlay. But if the area is the bedroom, then Cumulus From Cloud 9 Underlay is ideal to give you that softer feel underfoot.

Concrete flooring is extremely strong but sometimes needs some repair work over time. Continuous stress con concrete flooring can result in unsightly cracks that are not only ugly but can prove to be a tripping hazard as well. Garage and patio concrete slabs that have extensive cracks can be dangerous to walk on for yourself, family and guests. It is important to seal up any cracks as they arise. Usually people take a concrete sealer to fill up the cracks. I like to not only use a sealer but apply a concrete coating afterward. It not only looks better this way but the epoxy provides a non slip surface to prevent slipping.

To make patchwork easy, buy a bucket of pre mixed concrete patch. Dap makes a good product that dries hard and does not shrink or warp. Keep in mind that this patch material should only be used on smaller cracks or breaks in the surface. It does not have the structural strength to fill larger depressions. For big damage, you should have a professional look at the problem. They will probably remove the broken section and refill it with new concrete.

Once you have located your crack it is time to fill it up. Using a painter’s spackler, take some of the patch and press it into the groove. Make sure you push it a good way into the crack. Take a little bit more patch and smooth it level with the floor, drawing your blade at an angle and perpendicular to the crack line. Allow it to dry according to the recommended time frame on the bucket. This latex based material will form a very hard repair patch that should last several years at least. If more cracks appear you can reapply the material as needed as long as the crack is not too prominent. Although the material is light gray in color, it won’t match perfectly. I suggest adding a concrete coating over your flooring to make the color more uniform.

When choosing to install bamboo flooring in your home, there are many different options to choose from. From different styles of installation to different colors and types, you should be able to find the perfect bamboo flooring for your home. If you have chemical sensitivities, though, your options may be somewhat more limited.

When installing a bamboo floor into your home, the most popular styles are plank, tongue and groove, and floating floor. Plank floors are prefinished and will generally use a type of urea-formaldehyde type of finish. While these finishes are low-VOC, they may still bother some people with chemical sensitivities. Floating floors as well use adhesives that may contain some formaldehyde and produce off-gassing. If you have chemical sensitivities, the best option available is the tongue and groove style floor. These boards are made to click together without the use of adhesives.

Coloring bamboo floors is achieved through either a dying or heating process. Planks that are dyed can contain harmful chemicals and even heavy metals. Chemically sensitive people will want to stay away from dyed flooring materials. The other method of coloring bamboo flooring comes from a heating process. These boards are referred to as being carbonized. The carbonizing process will darken the natural color of bamboo. It will also weaken the material somewhat and may be up to ten percent less hard than non-carbonized bamboo flooring materials.

Chemically sensitive people wanting the look of strand woven bamboo will need to search for a manufacturer that uses a water based adhesive in the process. Most strand woven bamboo flooring is made using a low-VOC adhesive that contains formaldehyde. To insure that you are getting something formaldehyde free, you may need to ask for the MSDS sheet for the product.

Being chemically sensitive doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the natural beauty of bamboo in your home. It does, however, make the process of shopping for flooring a little more time consuming. When in doubt, ask the manufacturer more questions and never hesitate to ask for MSDS sheets of products you are considering.
