Many homeowners consider their garage the messiest part of their home. If your car can’t fit inside anymore because of the clutter and just taking a look inside your garage makes you feel nauseated, then it’s really time to clean up. Not only will you be able to get your car back inside again, but you can also create more space to finally have your own garage storage solution.

First, you need to plan your attack. Know where to begin. If you only have a tiny space, you shouldn’t have any problem clearing it up within the day. Find a suitable place outside your garage where you can house your items while you are tackling the job inside. You can also ask a member of your family to help you out so you can accomplish the task in no time at all. You can make it into a fun activity so your kids will be encouraged to help out.

You would be able to get plenty of work done if you start early. Your garage may look small but sorting things out takes a lot of time than you think. Starting early also gives you the benefit of finishing up early and working under a favorable condition, when the temperature outside is still cool. Work on one area at a time. You can start cleaning up the area nearest the doorway and work your way inside. Don’t skip a space and pick up every item that gets in your way. While your energy is still up, have the heart to throw away useless items so you can create more space afterwards.

Once you have cleaned up your garage, now is the perfect time to install storage units such as garage overhead storage systems. You can put all kinds of shelves, cabinets, and pegboards. You can choose products according to your budget and storage needs. Consider your options with the disadvantages and advantages of each unit in mind. Make sure that you end up owning and installing storage facilities that are reliable and could fill in your storage requirements.

If your garage floor looks dirty or it is full of oil spills and other grime, it may be time for you to do something with it. There are several options for covering up or re-doing flooring that you can choose from.

One of the simplest methods is to purchase floor mats that are specifically designed for garages. They come in different designs, most of which are channeled to allow water and other liquids to roll off. Popular designs include ribbed mats, diamond mats, and coin designed mats. You do not need to do anything, other than a cursory cleaning your floor before laying the matting down. It will cover up any stains and due to the designs on the mats it will also keep your floor clean.

Another option is to lay floor tiles down. A good floor tile should be able to withstand damage from oil spills, chemical spills, grease spills, anti-freeze spills and they should also be able to hold up to being driven on by heavy vehicles including small trucks. They look great, often forming a checker board pattern. Some tiles simply lock together to form a new floor, while others are self-adhesive. Most tiles are very easy to place.

Finally, a more long term and slightly more complex solution to upgrading your flooring is to actually paint the floor with special garage flooring paint and then cover with an epoxy solution. This takes quite a bit longer than simply laying tiles or matting down, as you have to wait for the paint to dry very well between applications. However, it is a very good longer term solution that also keeps your garage looking very clean and neat. The site, floors-web.com has several very good posts that go into more details on exactly how to apply each of these methods to the flooring of your garage and it is well worth checking out if you are planning on upgrading in this way.

The simple cement garage flooring that initially comes with a new garage is very functional and it will last a while, but eventually it will start to wear away. When the floor wears out it can become hazardous, or at the very least inconvenient, and an eyesore.

There are a number of different ways to refinish a garage floor. The floors can be made to look even better than they did when they were brand new. Add different colors, textures, and feels to the floor that puts it in a completely different class all together.

When deciding on a new garage floor covering there are many options to choose from. There are both paints and epoxys, there are also tiles, rubber mats, and vinyl covering. While all of these can make a floor look better some suit different purposes better than others. If the garage floor is getting scratched or just looks a little worn garage floor paint may be the thing to use. This will make the floor look like new and provide an extra coat of protection.

Another alternative is epoxy. This is more durable than paint and it will fix larger cracks and breaks in the floor than paint can’t. Garage floor epoxy is more expensive but for the job that it does it is well worth the cost. Epoxy can be made to look like different designs and styles that paint can not.

Tiles and rubber mats provide more protection than epoxy or paint but they are better for new floors. They will not fix damage done to the old floor, so it is best to put them on a nice level floor. There are some very heavy duty tiles that can make the floor surface very strong. Tiles are good because if one section gets broken it can easily be replaced without having to do something to the whole floor.

There are many different options when it comes to covering a garage floor. They all work, but to be truly satisfied with the results you should make sure that the covering used is the right one for the job. For any other flooring information floors-web.com is a great place to look.

Are you tired of those ugly black spots on your garage floor caused by oil leaks from your car? You know what I mean, you back out of the garage and there’s a black puddle of oil that leaked of your engine the night before. These are not only ugly they are also dangerous as they can be very slick if you accidently step in the oil and there happens to be a little water from rain or snow melt on the floor. But there is an even more dangerous situation: try walking through the house after accidently stepping in some oil and see if you don’t take your life in your wife’s hands.

Of course the first step to solving this problem is to fix the leak in the car. If you are a weekend mechanic then most of the time this is something that can be handled but if not, take it to shop and find out where the leak is coming from.

The second step is to deal with the floor. Degreasing the floor and then applying a good garage floor sealant will help to protect the surface of the concrete and also make any spills you do have less dangerous because the sealant will usually come with an anti-slip additive to spread on over the coating. Getting the floor absolutely clean is the first step to apply the sealant. Use a good quality degreaser first and then wash again with soap and water. You will need to put in some muscle at scrubbing. I have found a 16” or 18” floor broom works very well for this as you can put a lot of pressure down on the floor when you are working the detergent in.

After rinsing all the soap off the floor check to be sure you don’t have any petroleum left. This is very simple to do by checking for water beading. If the surface water seems to seep unto the surface of the concrete then the sealant will bond very well but if the water beads on the surface, this is usually shown by little spots or puddles that sit on top, then the sealant will not be able to bond and you will need to degrease and scrub some more.

After the floor is cleaned let it sit till completely dry and then apply the garage floor sealant. Once it is rolled out you can cast the anti-slip material on top which will give you good footing. Some additives are mixed in with the sealant before application but I like to spread it on top as it seems to give a better result.

You can generally walk on the surface in about 18 hours but don’t drive your car in for about 3 days. Check the label for curing times.

Bicycle storage comes in three forms and that is; wall mounted, ceiling mounted and a bicycle storage shed. It is the latter of these that have the largest range of costs associated with them as wall mounted and ceiling mounted solutions seem to be all around the same price. If you got a garden and have some free space to store bicycles I would highly recommend a bicycle storage shed – they are a particularly good idea if you have a number of bikes.

There is a wide range of prices though when it comes to outdoor bicycle storage which ranges from £35 or the way up to £450, I suppose to a certain extent the amount you spend would depend upon how valuable your bikes are and how often used them. The cheapest type of storage for outside use is called the cave and it is in essence a glorified tent it offers little to no security through for your bicycles but it will keeping dry and hence stop them from corroding in harsh weather. The cave can be secured to a wall or can in fact be freestanding it is olive drab in colour and hence it is particularly unobtrusive.

The most expensive type bike storage you can get for the outside is called the bike store it is in essence a metal box that has a large up and over doorway where you can gain access easily for up to 3 adult bikes. This thing is made to last and if your bikes are very valuable than I would highly recommend getting this one it can be securely locked from the outside and if anyone dared to break into it would make such a clanging noise that it would wake up the whole neighbourhood.

It has been said that if you intend on using your bike often you should opt for the most accessible type of bicycle storage you can because from my personal experience inadequate bike storage can easily put you off going for a bike ride because you will have to fight to get your bike out.

I converted my garage to a spare bedroom a few years ago, and I’ve been regretting it a little ever since. Don’t get me wrong, I love having the extra space and it serves as great hideout when I want to get away from it all. The thing is I had to start parking my car on the street, and I just don’t like doing that.

So I did what any rational person would do, I went to the internet to solve my problem. After finding various answers, two options looked the best to me; building a new garage addition to my home or buying a metal carport.

The first thing that caught my eye was the home addition. The cool thing about it was that I could have old garage back and have it seamlessly blend in to the rest of the house. It would be just like my old garage except I don’t have to give up my converted garage.

The only thing that put me off was the energy and cost of going down this route. I’m not very handy, so I would need to find a contractor to do the work for me. That opens up a can of worms, since I would have to really do my homework and make sure the contractor I hired would do the work well and within my budget. Plus, the cost of materials in addition to the labor would push me outside of my budget for sure.

The next option was a metal carport. I’m not going to lie; I was initially put-off by the idea of a standalone garage structure. It sounded pretty ghetto to me. But, after doing more research, I found that there were a lot of stylish options. Plus, they took up less space and were very affordable.

So although I liked the idea of doing another addition to my home, I decided to go with a contemporary looking, steel carport. It cost me $500 instead of the $1,000 plus I would have spent on a garage addition. Plus, I got a metal carport kit, so I was able to put it together myself.

Steel carports are a great option for many people out there looking to store extra cars, boats, or an RV. There are of course advantages and disadvantages to owing and steel carport and using it to house your vehicles. I will run over some of the pros and cons here and hopefully be able to assist you with your buying experience.

PROS

It is hard to beat the price of a steel carport. Compared to having an addition build on your garage or having a whole garage built putting up a car port can be a miniscule expense. It can be the difference between spending a couple hundred dollars or adding a second mortgage to your home.

It is also hard to ignore the time aspect of putting up a steel carport. Using a carport kit you can literally have a new carport up in an afternoon by yourself. Contrast this to other alternatives which may require dealing with building and zoning comities and submitting blue prints. If you want to avoid a headache this is a good way to do it.

The durability of steel carports shines brightly in the face of traditional wood construction. Having and open air structure can lead to fast degradation if you are in the right environment, but with metal it will virtually last until you take it down. Metal carport may even have a higher weather rating than the homes they are associated with. It normally takes what the insurance companies call, “an act of god” to destroy on of these structures

Getting the most out of your vehicles is important. We spend a large percentage of our income on our vehicles and it is essential that we take care of them. Not only so the look good but also so that they retain their value. Plus everyone knows that a clean car runs better.

CONS

Not all neighborhoods will allow you to add steel carports to your property. Deed restrictions can prohibit these structures. It is best to look into what your options are before you purchase. Not having all of the facts before you buy can lead to some difficult situations.

There is no doubt about it. A carport is great option but it isn’t the same as keeping you vehicle inside. It is impossible to keep all of the rain and dust off of your vehicle if all four sides of the structure are open. Carports are a good solution but not a perfect solution. For new vehicles or vehicles you want to keep in immaculate condition you may want to keep them inside.

Safety issues – this is related to the previous point. Parking in a carport, if it is not on enclosed property is no different than leaving a car outside in terms of safety. If you are in a high crime area a carport won’t do you much good.

These are just a few of the considerations that you should take into account when considering a carport. Shop around and educate yourself about the different aspects of steel carports.

Installing a sectional garage onto your home is a really great idea. Depending on the type of property you are dealing with, though, you are going to have to understand a few key aspects that could effect the outcome of the project. First, you must determine the size of building you’re going to be constructing. If the building is too large, or the foundation is over a certain square footage, you are going to have to contact the county in order to pull permits. If you aren’t comfortable with this, you can consider calling a contractor who will be able to perform all the necessary paperwork.

Once you’ve determined whether or not you’re going to have to pull a permit to complete the project, the next thing you are going to have to do is to figure out who will be complete the work. These types of jobs are best left up to someone who knows how to do the work, but is also bonded and insured through the state. This will help you to ensure that the job is completed properly, but also that you are able to call on someone should the work fail at any point in time after the contractor has left from the job.

The last thing that you’ll need to consider, something that has probably already been covered, is that you need to have a budget that you can stick to. These projects can get incredibly expensive unless you keep yourself, and your finances in check. By setting yourself a budget, you are going to have to account for any unexpected costs that you could incur throughout the process. If you go with a contractor, you’ll have to worry a lot less about these unseen costs, than if you were to buy a sectional garages kit.

When looking for a new garage heater for use in your garage, you will want to know that there are several different types for you to choose from. When a garage heater is in use, it should not be left unattended. If you are in your garage working and want to use your garage heater to keep warm while you are working, then you will want to have them turned on. But if you are going to go in the house for more than just one minute, you will want to be sure that your garage heater is turned off.

Depending on how large your garage is will determine how many garage heaters you are going to need in order to keep your garage warm. When looking at the different styles, consider the way that you are going to install the heater. Are you looking for a garage heater that is hung on the wall or are you wanting to purchase a garage heater that is used by setting it on the floor? There are good and bad sides to both types of garage heaters that you are looking at having. Each of the type of garage heater will serve you in the way that you want it to and that is providing you with enough heat to be comfortable while working in your garage.

Garage heaters that remain on the floor can be moved from one spot to another while allowing you to keep warm and can be easily unplugged when not in use. This is good for the summer months since in most areas you are not going to need to have a garage heater in the summer. If you are wanting to get a garage heater that will not be placed on the floor and that are not mobile so that when your children or animals are in the garage they do not get injured, then you will want to purchase a wall hung garage heater to be placed in your garage. Both of these types are going to have an upside while also having a downside.

Over the years, like many people, I have collected various items, such as furniture, and kept it in the garage. Unfortunately, I am no longer able to get my car in there. If I had anticipated this years ago, I could have built a storage shed, but I didn’t.

On the whole, the car is safe outside but it tends to get dirty pretty fast and birds leave their mess on it, which means spending precious leisure time cleaning it. The best solution, I figured, was to build a carport and so I went in search for some plans.

Initially, I thought I would draw my own plans and get started with the building straight away. unfortunately, this was not the case and it proved to be a much bigger undertaking than I thought it would be. I decided instead to go online and find some carport plans for a building that I could easily build myself, that would meet the local building regulations and that would look good.

When buying plans, you do not just get the drawings, you also get a list of materials needed. There is also a list of the quantities of materials needed and all the hardware required. This ensures that the project should go smoothly.

I had to make sure that the carport was adequately anchored down to the foundations. We do occasionally experience high winds in my area which can cause problems. The carport does not have any wall and so strong winds can lift it like an umbrella and destroy it if it is not anchored properly.

The collection of snow on the roof was another important factor to consider in the plans. Luckily, the plan I chose had a correctly pitched roof and strong supporting legs. This would allow and heavy collections of snow to fall away.

Eventually, I settled on a set of plans which addressed all these issues. After obtaining the necessary building permit, I set to work on ordering all the hardware and materials. It just went to reinforce my view that correct planning can foresee any potential problems and overcome them before they happen. Over a weekend, with a friend, the carport was finally built.
