Concrete flooring is extremely strong but sometimes needs some repair work over time. Continuous stress con concrete flooring can result in unsightly cracks that are not only ugly but can prove to be a tripping hazard as well. Garage and patio concrete slabs that have extensive cracks can be dangerous to walk on for yourself, family and guests. It is important to seal up any cracks as they arise. Usually people take a concrete sealer to fill up the cracks. I like to not only use a sealer but apply a concrete coating afterward. It not only looks better this way but the epoxy provides a non slip surface to prevent slipping.
To make patchwork easy, buy a bucket of pre mixed concrete patch. Dap makes a good product that dries hard and does not shrink or warp. Keep in mind that this patch material should only be used on smaller cracks or breaks in the surface. It does not have the structural strength to fill larger depressions. For big damage, you should have a professional look at the problem. They will probably remove the broken section and refill it with new concrete.
Once you have located your crack it is time to fill it up. Using a painter’s spackler, take some of the patch and press it into the groove. Make sure you push it a good way into the crack. Take a little bit more patch and smooth it level with the floor, drawing your blade at an angle and perpendicular to the crack line. Allow it to dry according to the recommended time frame on the bucket. This latex based material will form a very hard repair patch that should last several years at least. If more cracks appear you can reapply the material as needed as long as the crack is not too prominent. Although the material is light gray in color, it won’t match perfectly. I suggest adding a concrete coating over your flooring to make the color more uniform.
