Floods and leaks can cause water damage mold in any home or building. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a homeowner or you run a restaurant, mold (fungus) that is caused by leaks and floods can become one of the most destructive forces around.

One of the main keys to minimizing the mold is by acting quickly and either by removing the toxic mold yourself if the damages are minimal or by hiring a professional mold removal company. If you don’t do either, you’re not only putting yourself at risk, but others at risk from the harmful affects of mold as well.

The first step in removing the mold is to extract the waters from the home or business. The process could be as simple as air-drying the affected area to using a pump to remove the waters. Still, this is actually the most crucial step since a delay can cause damages to the structure and foundation of the building and the health of those who enter the building.

Once all of the waters have been removed from the building, the homeowner or professional should make any repairs necessary before proceeding. Then, once the repairs have been made, fans or a special vacuum used to soak up moisture should be used.

The next step is to remove the mold from the home or business. This can be done using products that are specifically design to permanently get rid of mold. If you’re using a professional and you’re worried about chemicals, you’ll want to ask prior to hiring what types of products the company uses to clean up the mold.

Once your home or business is free from water damage mold, you may need to decide whether or not any of your property needs to be restored or replaced. If the mold was minimal, you may be able to save some items, but often times it’s better to throw it out and start fresh so that you don’t run the risk of another fungus invasion.
